Poker is a card game, or many variations of a card game, and the most popular of a class of games called vying games. In Poker players with fully or partially concealed cards make wagers into a central pot. The pot is awarded to the player or players with the best combination of cards. Another reference to Poker is video poker which is a single-player game seen in casinos much like a slot machine. More recently, online poker has become very popular where players can play against others in a virtual poker game. In recent years a variation of poker named Texas Holdem has become extremely popular and is even covered on television.



Online Poker allows players of little to know ability to play without the embarassement that would go along with playing poker in a casino at an actual poker table. Online poker is responsible for the explosion in popularity of poker. When PartyGaming, the parent company of PartyPoker.Com went public, the offering was huge at $8 Billion. The online poker market seems to be consolidating, howeber, with PartyGaming buying EmpirePoker.Com. Poker Stars and www.Poker.Com have yet to go public as well. The slowdown may be in part to poker legislation that is clouding the future of online gaming.
