Chess is a board game of strategy and thought which is played by two players. Chess is played on a square board of eight rows (called ranks) and eight columns (called files). This 8x8 layout makes a Chess Board 64 squares of alternating colored spaces. Chess players begin the game with 16 pieces which can move in defined directions, some of which are also of limited range. All pieces can remove opponent's pieces by landing on the space they occupy. The object of Chess is to checkmate the opponent; this occurs when the opponent's king is in check, and no move can be made that would prevent the king from being in check.
